A leading academic medical center in the western United States has long used digital signage to communicate with visitors, patients and students across many facilities. While digital signage had proven to be a valuable communications resource, the organization’s messages had grown increasingly stale. This was mainly due to burdensome operational procedures, which required a consistent focus on content creation, software updates and network maintenance.
With plans for its new rehabilitation hospital moving forward, the organization desired a new approach that would reduce the technical burden on staff. This was especially important as digital signage would be a core component of a broader, innovative connected room initiative that would integrate multiple patient-assistive technologies.
The IT staff turned to Carousel Digital Signage for a cloud-based digital signage software solution that would integrate with the technologies comprising their new connected room ecosystems – all of which operate on a common iOS-based platform – while simplifying digital signage operations for staff. The organization hired JAMF; a device management provider that helps IT departments bring the Apple experience to corporate, education and government organizations, and to seamlessly integrate the connected room technologies and applications on the same network with Carousel Cloud.
The initial Carousel Cloud deployment, now live, drives 4K content to 60 digital signage displays across several lobbies, hallways, two gyms and a cafeteria. In addition to the Carousel CMS for content management, the network leverages Carousel’s innovative approach of converting Apple TV devices to media players. Beyond the initial Apple TV device configurations, JAMF manages the scheduling and maintenance of all iOS upgrades and patches.
JAMF brings additional value to the digital signage operation by enabling interoperability between iPads and Carousel Cloud via AirPlay. Staff can use AirPlay to interrupt general Carousel content and deliver on-demand patient education sessions. The Carousel digital signage content immediately resumes following the session’s conclusion.
Carousel Cloud immediately removes the technical headaches of the organization’s other digital signage systems through an intuitive content management process, and a lightweight, software-defined architecture. Hospital staff instead focuses on preserving, enhancing and restoring the quality of life for patients with severe and disabling conditions. Staff can easily and reliably communicate important messages, and use digital signage as a viable patient education platform.
Carousel Cloud’s partnership with JAMF will grow more valuable as the digital signage network scales. The hospital will soon expand Carousel Cloud into patient rooms, driving stronger integration with the connected room ecosystem that automates zero-touch patient admission, discharge and room transfers; and enables in-room BYOD functionality for patients and staff. Carousel Cloud cleanly operates on the same network with innovative technologies across building automation, secure BYOD object control, and enterprise voice control, all of which demonstrates the true innovation of the hospital’s connected room initiative.
With most of the “busy work” outsourced, the hospital’s IT staff is left with a fully functional, enterprise-level digital signage network in the cloud that requires minimal interaction on their side. More importantly, Carousel Cloud delivers enormous value in helping patients focus on recovery and education, and live full and productive lives as active community participants upon release.
